The village was incorporated from a part of the original area of the town of Marathon. The village dates back to 1856.
The Village of Marathon City has several parks to provide outdoor recreational activities. The Marathon Area Swim Association operates an indoor Swim Center at the corner of 4th and Market streets and Marathon High School has a fully equipped Wellness Center open to the public throughout the year.
